#006: The Skill of Not Quitting on Your Goal
Have you ever quit on a goal? Did you know that quitting on your goal is a skill you perfect over time? It is.
And let me tell you, I’m Olympic level!
For years, I quit on almost every personal goal I’ve ever set for myself … at least once. Business goals were always easy… it’s the personal ones that tripped me up.
Give me an unsolvable business problem any day. No problem. But when it comes to advancing leadership skills, dealing with conflict, improving self confidence, etc, it always got a bit dicier because you’re essentially trying to rewire brain patterns and inner monologues that aren’t easily shifted.
So there’s a lot more failure… and I didn’t love that. So I’d find a reason to quit. I did that all the time.
And the more you quit… the easier it becomes.
But what if I told you that NOT quitting on your goal is also a skill? And like any skill, it’s something you get better at with practice? What could you achieve if you got really good at the skill of NOT quitting on your goal?
In this episode, I’m sharing rock-solid insights for you to stop quitting on your goal and finally make your personal development targets a permanent reality.
Imagine what that might be like? Think of a personal development goal you have right now… maybe the one you’ve been working on again/off again for years without getting any traction?
What would it be like to achieve that goal? What would be different in your life? In your career?
My life completely changed when I learned to not quit on my goals. And my first step in the right direction was to start facing the fact that I was the one choosing to quit. It wasn’t that it wasn’t a ‘good time’, or the bad boss, or my over-packed work schedule, or my crazy commute, or the person on my team who needs a babysitter that got in the way of my development.
Quitting on my goals was a choice I made. Full stop. And it’s the choice you’re making too. No one’s making you.
If you truly consider for a minute, you know it’s true. And I think that’s really good news because if you’re in control of the quitting, then you’re also in control of the not quitting.
So if there are some goals you’re serious about achieving, and you’re ready to do the work, this podcast is going to help you recognize your patterns, understand why you quit, and teach you the best way to stick to your goal.
First, let’s talk about IDENTIFYING YOUR QUITTING PATTERN. First we explore why you quit and your specific quitting pattern, including the excuses you use to justify quitting.
Then we explore WHAT YOU’RE REALLY AVOIDING BY QUITTING, and I’ll give you the punchline right now… it’s always a feeling. It’s not that you don’t have time, or you are confused on how to do something, or you’re some kind of special case. Anytime we avoid doing something it’s because we want to avoid feeling something. We’ll explore the most common feelings you’re avoiding and why you avoid them.
And finally, it gets juicy. Let’s talk about THE BEST WAYS TO STICK TO YOUR GOAL. As part of this discussion, we also talk about what NOT to do. A lot of the time, the most common approaches we learn in corporate are great in a pinch (e.g. suck it up and power through), but are not a realistic long-term strategy. We’re going to share strategies that sustain and keep you moving forward with positive momentum vs. sheer grit.
So identify a goal that you’ve been struggling with and listen to this episode. By the end, you’ll be so onto yourself that you’ll be able to catch the quitting pattern before it even starts and employ more effective strategies to truly achieve whatever you want.
