#026: Trying Not To Be Emotional At Work

Learn to be effectively emotional at work so you have a healthier professional experience without creating a mess you have to clean up after.

A few weeks ago, I was talking to a client who said “I’m trying not to be emotional at work”.

How many of you have had that thought?  I have.  

For years I believed it was unprofessional to be emotional at work.  I was taught that emotions have no place at work.  And while things are changing, that is still the prevailing belief. 

But let’s question this for a second.  

Is it really true that emotions have no place at work?  I mean, whether you like it or not, you’re having emotions all the time.  Repressing or pushing away your emotions never works.  You either end up taking it out on the wrong person, or succumbing to anxiety and burnout. 

That’s not very healthy.  Or professional. 

The real problem isn’t the emotions.  It’s not the feeling of anger or jealousy that makes you ‘unprofessional’.  It’s how you react to your emotions that could make things messy for you.
